Chamisal Vineyards is located in San Luis Obispo’s Edna Valley. Chamisal Vineyards is comprised of 82 vineyard acres. Chamisal Vineyards was originally planted in 1973 making it the first Vineyards in the appellation. Our focus is on crafting Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Grenache from our unique estate winery here on the Central Coast.

Position Description:
The Viticulture Technician will be responsible for gathering all vineyard data throughout the growing season and through harvest, including bud counts, yield assessments, soil moisture and irrigation monitoring, maturity sampling, pest and disease scouting. The position will promote more effective monitoring of the vineyard as well as provide efficient communication links between the winery and vineyard. This position is also responsible for maintaining relationships with growers and communicating direction from the winemaking team to the grower. Develops and maintains vineyard records on cultural practices, yields, environmental data and grape quality. Monitors crop development and may forecast crop tonnages. May coordinate grape deliveries.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Work with the winemaker to develop specific goals, policy, procedures and quality objectives for the Estate wine-growing process.
• Gather all viticultural data necessary for qualitative and quantitative management of the Estate Vineyard.
• Work in conjunction with Winegrower to ensure that grape requirements are met by independent growers.
• Provide technical recommendations to growers, ensuring that grapes meet quality and supply objectives.
• Coordinate picking both on Estate vineyard and with contract fruit including transportation of picking bins and or grapes where required.
• Ensure quality of grapes delivered to the winery from both Estate and contract growers by careful monitoring of picking and sorting.
• Monitor irrigation programs and record keeping performed by the Vineyard Foreman. Makes irrigation recommendations based on soil moisture and tissue monitoring.
• Take grape samples during growing season and at harvest and delivers to laboratory.
• Monitor vineyard for pests and disease problems as well nutritional deficiencies.
• Ensures sustainable practices are maintained in all aspects of our Estate farming.
• Assist Vineyard Managers with pesticide reporting and compliance.
• Works with Safety Coordinator to ensure proper safety record keeping and best practice procedures.
• Assist with research and development projects.
• Creates a written report during the growing season and summary report at end of the season. Develops recommendations for following year.
• Works additional tasks as needed during harvest and fermentation. These tasks would not compete with other primary responsibilities of vineyard monitoring and grape sampling.

Education Training and Other Requirements:
• Education: Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Viticulture or related biological science required
• Years of Experience: three or more years of directly related experience.
• Bi-lingual in Spanish and English is preferred.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with vineyard workers, foreman and winery management.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Windows (Word, Outlook and Excel) at an intermediate level is required.
• Must have valid California Driver’s License.
• Must be able to drive a small truck and trailer and be able to operate an ATV.
• Able to lift and carry for short periods 40-50 lbs.
• Must be able to work night hours and overtime as needed for harvest.
• Able to walk/hike/stoop/bend repeatedly. Includes hiking in vineyards on both flat and steeply terraced vineyards.
• Able to sit at computer work station for up to one hour per day.
