Summary or Faculty Qualifications
At the direction of the Assistant Director for Grounds and with minimal supervision, the Lead Gardener performs all aspects of horticulture and grounds maintenance to provide for a safe and beautiful campus experience, and to expertly maintain the garden areas and collections of the Barnes Arboretum.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Perform all duties peculiar to, and normally required in the trade of gardener/horticulturist following recognized procedures and techniques for such work.
• Maintain grounds and garden by performing timely planting, pruning, weeding, composting, mulching and other horticultural duties.
• Identify and correct problems of plants, ornamental grasses, trees, shrubs, e.g., diseases, injuries, pest infestations.
• Consult with the Director of Living Collections and Coordinator of Living Collections as needed.
• Maintain the campus in a safe, neat and beautiful condition.
• Keep all storm drain inlets clear of leaves and debris.
• Police campus and dispose of refuse.
• Empty trash cans
• Assist in furniture and event set-ups, decorations for special functions, etc.
• Supervise/direct gardeners, groundskeepers, contractors, student workers, interns, volunteers and seasonal/temporary workers
• Operate snow removal equipment.
• Operate gardening tools and equipment.
• Operate tools associated with gardening and gardening equipment.
• Inspect the equipment to be used each day to insure that it is safe and in proper working order. Clean equipment daily or at the end of each use to insure a professional image.

Secondary Responsibilities:

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:

• Must be able to sit, stand, kneel for greater than 4 hours at a time
• Drive for 4 hours at a time
• Climb ladders and stairs
• Must be able to bend and reach
• Frequent lifting of up to 25lbs and occasional lifting of up to 60lbs
• Must be able to work weekends and holidays, as needed
• Must report to work during emergencies and inclement weather

Minimum Requirements:
• High school diploma or GED, with a certificate in Horticultural Science or similar certification
• Formal training in ornamental horticulture or related science or a combination of education, training, and related experience in horticulture and landscape fields to provide the required expertise to perform the duties of this position.
• Three to five years of gardening/horticulture experience.
• Competency in plant identification and propagation.
• Valid Driver’s license
• Excellent organizational, management, and communications skills
• Must be proficient in writing and speaking in the English language

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience at a public garden
• Five to ten years gardening/horticulture experience
• Associates degree in Horticulture Science
