Farm Manager

9 Miles East Farm

Saratoga Springs , New York

Lead vegetable growing operation at 9 Miles East Farm near Saratoga Springs, NY.
29 acre vegetable farm producing vegetables and herbs for 9 Miles East Farm's workplace wellness and subscription meal delivery operations, as well as for a CSA at Skidmore College and for use in our on-farm commercial catering kitchen.
The job is a good fit for a high-energy, hands-on leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The right person will enjoy engaging and inspiring the rest of the team with his or her passion for growing high-quality produce, and set high standards for team performance and productivity.
You should have at least two years of farming experience, be self-directed and comfortable working independently as well as leading a small team. Mahindra tractor, BCS walk-behind, Jang seeders, drip irrigation, etc.
Organic growing methods, all inputs OMRI.

Role & Responsibilities
Plan farm production, start transplants, direct seed, transplant, cultivate, harvest, wash, and package high-quality vegetables and herbs.

Why 9 Miles East Farm?
We're expanding the audience for healthy local food. There's already plenty of produce at the farmers' market and we don't want to compete with other farmers. Instead, we bring our vegetables to the employees of big companies in New York and the Boston area.
Farm employees have the option for year-round employment in other aspects of our operation.
Having our own commercial kitchen allows us to use "cosmetically challenged" produce that might otherwise be wasted.

Why Saratoga Springs?
Great quality of life, thriving farm and food scene, easy access to Boston and NYC, reasonable cost of living. Two people who work in our kitchen just bought a house with what they make working for 9 Miles East Farm. You can buy a nice Victorian house on five acres for less than you currently pay in rent: (not our farm -- just an example of low housing costs). Or a cool place in town:

Competitive salary and profit sharing. Also open to allocating some land for you to use in your own production.

The role is a great fit for someone who want to learn for a few more years before starting his or her own farm, or a long-term position for someone who loves to grow vegetables and who would rather focus on growing than selling.
