The Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Department in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at South Dakota State University is offering a 9-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Extension Horticulture (90% Extension/10% Teaching). This position is supervised by the Department Head of Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science.

The successful candidate will specifically address the horticultural needs of homeowners and the general public regarding management of flowers and ornamental landscapes using environmentally-sound best management practices. The Extension Horticulture Specialist supports the SDSU Extension mission, strategic vision and planning assumptions, complies with applicable federal and state laws and regulations, and all University policies, including Affirmative Action, and commits to the inclusion of diverse South Dakotans.

SDSU is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to and/or coordinate Extension programming that addresses the experiences of underrepresented minorities in organizations, and actively seeks to increase social and intellectual diversity among its faculty and staff. The successful applicant will be expected to develop and deliver a nationally-recognized, state-wide extension program in consumer horticulture, focusing on greenhouse and field herbaceous plant production and use that employ environmentally-sound best practices. The successful candidate will disseminate science-based information to inform homeowners and the general public using extension methods that are responsive to clientele needs and appropriate for the audience and situation. The incumbent also will establish innovative outreach programs including contributing to the SDSU Master Gardener volunteer program and will contribute regularly to the on-going programs of the SDSU Extension team and McCrory Gardens. Establishing strong ties with stakeholders and industry leaders is an important role of this position. Securing extramural funding to support outreach programming and publishing in scholarly journals is expected. The successful candidate also will support our undergraduate and graduate teaching programs.

• Must be authorized to work in the United States. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
• Ph.D. in Horticultural Science or closely related field successfully completed by the appointment start date.
• The successful candidate must be able to interact and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Valid driver’s license, or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, and willingness to travel.

• Teaching experience at the university level.
