Extension Assistant

This position will: Assist with preparation, planting, maintenance, treatments, data collection, and data analysis for field based and controlled environment turfgrass research and assist with dissemination of outdoor water conservation extension information to Oklahoma citizens. Assist with implementation and dissemination of turfgrass extension programming to the professional fine turf industry. Assist with conducting workshops, half-day seminars, assist with participation in turfgrass, irrigation, and landscape industry affiliated trade shows and conferences, video conferencing, and assist with providing information for Extension publications including guides, fact sheets, bulletins, current reports, brochures, and assist with providing information for turfgrass and urban landscape water conservation websites, and social media outlets. This position may require frequent trips from Stillwater, OK to Bixby, OK to establish, maintain, and collect data from field research and extension plots and from Stillwater, OK to Oklahoma City, OK to establish, maintain, demonstration plots, and to assist with professional turfgrass and water conservation extension programming. Position Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's in Horticulture, Plant & Soil Sciences, Ag Ed, Ag Comm, or closely related field  
  • Two to four years of prior working experience in turfgrass culture and management, landscape management, soil management, and/or pesticide application and safety is necessary.  
  • Valid driver's license. Oklahoma pesticide applicator certification in Core and categories 3a (Turf and Ornamental) and 10 (Demonstration and Research) or ability to obtain these certifications within 45 days of hire.  
  • Excellent organizational skills; knowledge of or the ability to learn MS Office software including Word, Excel and PowerPoint; ability to learn the use of digital cameras and digital scanners; ability to operate turfgrass equipment and machinery such as mowers, fertilizer spreaders, pesticide sprayers, tractors, skid-steers; written communication and public speaking skills to extend turfgrass management and science and water conservation information to the public; ability to work as a team and to manage multiple tasks with and without direct supervision; excellent interpersonal skills.  
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds. 

Preferred:

  • Master's in Horticulture, Plant & Soil Science, Ag Ed, Ag Comm, or closely related field  
  • Three or more years experience in at least one of the following areas: turfgrass management, horticulture, plant & soil sciences, agronomy, entomology, plant pathology, natural resources, cooperative extension, education, teaching and/or communication.
