Position Summary:
Candidate will assist the QCC Ranch Manager in the daily operations of the beef and/or bison herd. Duties may include feeding, administering medication, maintaining facilities, monitoring the herd for signs of illness, assisting with calving, marketing animals, transporting sales stock, maintaining farm equipment, and maintaining facilities.
Essential job functions:
- Assist with daily ranch operations including caring for cattle, predator control, fence repair, land care, and pen construction and maintenance.
- Report to Ranch Manager.
- Working knowledge of ranch documentation.
- Manage respective ranch personnel.
- Examine animals to detect illness, injury, or diseases.
- Examine animals’ physical characteristics such as rate of weight gain.
- Groom, clip, trim, and/or castrate animals.
- Dock ears and tails.
- Shear coats to collect hair.
- Herd livestock to pastures for grazing or to scales, trucks, or other enclosures.
- Mark livestock to identify ownership and grade.
- Mix feed, additives, and medicines in prescribed portions.
- Assess the health of cattle and administer medications.
- Perform duties related to livestock reproduction, such as breeding animals with appropriate timeframes, performing artificial inseminations, and helping with animal births.
- May assist with wildlife operations including capture, culling, etc.
- Must have a valid driver’s license (CDL is preferred but not required).
- May be asked to drive ranch vehicles with or without trailer.
- Make recommendations on facility improvement and assist in its implementation (fences, working systems, etc.)
- All other duties as assigned.
Non-essential Job Functions:
May attend professional meetings or pertinent workshops. Participate in administrative staff meetings and attend other meetings and trainings as necessary.
Job Specifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to meet the minimum insurance requirements of the Quapaw Nation’s Motor Vehicle Policy.
- Self-starter, highly motivated, and able to complete projects with limited or no direct supervision once trained.
- Desire to improve processes and efficiency throughout the operation.
- Possess the ability for strategic planning for the future of the operation and ability to see projects through to completion.
- Knowledge and experience with cattle health and nutrition.
- Ability to work outdoors for long periods of time during any weather conditions.
- Knowledge of basic equipment repair and welding.
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalent. At least five to ten years of verifiable experience with cattle operations. Must have experience of properly operating farm equipment. Must have experience with horses and catching/ sorting cattle horseback.
Physical Abilities:
The incumbent must be able to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods of time, as well as regularly reach above the shoulders; must be able to push, pull, and lift up to and including 50 pounds without experiencing physical discomfort or pain. Excellent eyesight – with or without vision correction – is mandatory.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed mostly outdoors and inclement weather.
