Description

Alisal, a luxury 10,500 private acre working Ranch and Resort in the heart of Santa Barbara Wine Country is seeking an experienced and service-oriented Head Wrangler to join our team. Under the direction of the Senior Leadership, the Head Wrangler oversees year-round activity of the Barn, horseback riding program, and kid’s Barnyard. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: care and well-being of the horses (about 120 head); overseeing a staff of 25-30 Employees, all guest events and activities of the division, as well as training and managing of new and existing employees; mentoring and developing department managers and supervisors of the division; managing budgets; program development; maintenance and upkeep of all related equipment and facilitates (Barn area, tack room, corrals, arena, pastures, trails); and overseeing guest operations to ensure a safe and memorable experience for all.


•Directing the daily horseback riding procedure including the saddling and unsaddling of horses, the sign-up process, and assignment of horses to guests.
•Monitoring and training of the horses to ensure they are healthy, fit, and prepared for interaction with guests.
•Purchasing and substituting horses as required to maintain fitness standards.
•Ordering and maintaining supplies and feed as required.
•Overseeing formal training of all employees in the division, ensuring they can lead enjoyable rides for guests while maintaining a safety-first mentality.
•Maintaining and upkeeping of the Barn area, tack room, Barnyard, corrals, arena, pastures, and trails as well as all tack and related equipment and machinery ensuring all is kept in a clean, tidy, and in appropriate and safe condition.
•Overseeing the daily care, maintenance, vetting, feeding, and watering of horses and other Barn animals.
•Assisting in the preparation of the Barn department annual operations and capital budgets and adhering to financial objectives.
•Collaborating with Sales & Marketing to promote and orchestrate all aspects of the horseback riding program, Rodeo, and Kid’s Barn Yard program.
•Resolving guest complaints and issues as needed.
•Ensuring any guest-related accidents are properly documented and handled.
•Establishing work standards and procedures for all areas of the operation.
•Creating and enforces safety policies and procedures.
•Developing written job descriptions, department manuals, training programs, safety procedures.
•Hiring, scheduling, staffing, and handling all other personnel transactions to meet division and guest needs.
•Approving payroll and enforcing proper timekeeping procedures, meal and rest periods in accordance with Alisal policies and managing productivity for optimum effectiveness and efficiency.
•Supervising Wranglers’ and Barnyard Attendants’ daily work, handling, investigating and resolving employee complaints/concerns along with appropriate documentation.
•Attending all required staff meetings and conducting monthly departmental staff and safety meetings.
•Completing all other managerial administrative duties as well as projects and assignments as determined and directed by senior management.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and/or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
The employee regularly works near animals and equipment. The employee frequently works in outside conditions and is frequently exposed to the elements. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.


QUALIFICATIONS
• Minimum 10 years of Equine and Barn Operations experience in senior leadership role.
• Prior ranch experience desired; animal care and handling required.
• Ability to operate ranch heavy machinery (tractors, utility carts, water truck)
• Strong customer service ability.
• Desire to establish outstanding, authentic, and memorable interactions with internal and external guests.
• Experience with CA labor laws, timekeeping, reading, and utilizing financial statements.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of guests or employees.
• Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 100lbs.
• Able to work on site and to stand, sit, walk, and move continuously for duration of shift.
• Ability to work outside, indoors, in varying temperatures, as well as confined spaces.

REQUIREMENTS
• Must be able to present proof of identity and legal right to work in the United States post offer, pre-employment.
• Must have current and valid CA Driver’s License for operating company vehicles and be covered under fleet insurance.
• Conditional offer subject to criminal background check and DMV record review.
• Open availability to accommodate varying schedules as well as able to work on weekends and holidays

• Compensation range $90,000 to $100,000 based on experience.
