General Statement of Job

Under limited supervision, employee is primarily responsible for supporting the management and day-to-day operation of the Spotsylvania County Farmers' Market (SCFM) at assigned locations. Responsibilities include efficiently and effectively operating the market on designated days, coordinating market communications and social media, and maintaining strong vendor and customer relations. This position assists the Farmers' Market / Agriculture Coordinator with administrative and operational duties as needed and reports directly to the Farmers' Market / Agriculture Coordinator.

 

Weekend and evening work will be required during the market season.

Special Duties & Responsibilities
  • Market Operations:
    • Serves as the primary on-site manager for the SCFM during assigned market days.
    • Oversees the set-up and tear-down of the market, ensuring all vendors, equipment, and signage are properly placed and secured.
    • Operates the SCFM information booth, serving as the main point of contact for customer and vendor inquiries, suggestions, and complaints.
    • Collects, records, and reports relevant market data (e.g., vendor attendance, customer counts, and sales metrics).
    • Ensures a clean and attractive market environment is maintained at all times.
  • Vendor and Stakeholder Relations:
    • Administers the vendor application process, ensuring all applicants comply with market rules, regulations, and licensing requirements.
    • Assists in the recruitment and selection of new vendors to diversify the market's product offerings.
    • Maintains a positive working relationship with vendors and assists with conflict resolution on-site.
    • Assists the Farmers' Market / Agriculture Coordinator in coordinating with key stakeholders, including the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office and Virginia Community Food Connections.
    • Conducts farm visits as directed by the Coordinator.
  • Communications and Promotion:
    • Develops and manages the market’s social media presence to promote vendors, special events, and community engagement.
    • Coordinates and assists with special events and market programs that provide wholesome and educational activities for the community.
    • Assists with the implementation of the market's promotional plan.
  • Administrative and Compliance:
    • Manages the collection of market fees and maintains accurate payment records.
    • Ensures compliance with all market rules and regulations, as well as food safety and state/local health requirements.
    • Assists in developing and preparing emergency plans for the market, including having quick access to a first-aid kit and fire extinguisher.
    • Assists in the management and supervision of market staff and volunteers, as required.
    • Administers a communications plan for each market season.
    • Serves as staff to the Agricultural/Forestal District Review Committee as directed.
    • Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Training & Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent with a background in customer service and excellent written and verbal communication skills; basic computer skills with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and basic accounting abilities are required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

Experience with social media is preferred, Microsoft Office Suite, and proficiency in online databases

 

Experience with Farmers’ Markets is preferred.

 

Must possess and maintain a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license.

Special Requirements
  • Knowledge of farm product marketing policies, procedures, and activities.
  • Knowledge of the seasonality of crops, crop production, succession planting, and season extension.
  • Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and methods utilized in agricultural institutions.
  • Ability to keep abreast of any changes within the marketing field.
  • Has the ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with employees, supervisors, members of the general public, and the Department of Economic Development.
  • Ability to assemble information and make written reports and documents in a concise, clear, and effective manner.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and work with little direct supervision as situations warrant.
  • Ability to use mathematical skills to handle required calculations using percentages and decimals.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency with computers. Ability to read, understand, and interpret financial and computer reports and related materials.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, financial, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
  • Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange financial information.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be physically able to operate a variety of office machines, tools, and equipment, such as a computer, printer, typewriter, copy machine, facsimile machine, encoding machine, calculator, pager, and telephone.Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects is considered a requirement for Medium Work. Frequent standing and walking for prolonged periods may be required. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions, for extended periods of time. Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually, with office equipment. Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated office equipment.Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment,controlknobs, switches, etc.Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motions while coordinating the other hand with different activities.Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. May require the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.May require the ability to talk and/or hear (talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing-perceiving the nature of sounds by ear).  Must be able to communicate by telephone.
