We're looking for a responsible and highly motivated Crop Health Specialist to join our Agronomy team as a vital member of our research programs. This position provides technical and functional guidance for a specialized team responsible for irrigation and plant nutrition activities in open fields. The position is accountable for developing and managing integrated strategies that optimize irrigation efficiency, nutrient management and crop health to achieve maximum yield and sustainability. The role involves the design, installation, maintenance, implementation and monitoring of irrigation and fertilization programs, as well diagnosing and resolving plant health issues through data- driven agronomic practices.

What You'll Do:

  • Coordinate daily irrigation activities ensuring that all the fields receive a proper amount of water and fertilizer on time to guarantee seed production.      

  • Develop and implement fertilizer and fertigation programs based on soil and tissue analyses.

  • Conduct soil fertility assessments and tissue sampling to recommend nutrient applications that align with crop requirements and environmental standards. Monitor nutrient uptake and efficiency using laboratory and field data.

  • Conduct soil moisture, evapotranspiration and water quality analyses to determine optimal irrigation schedules and quantities.

  • Regularly scout fields to identify nutrient deficiencies and stress indicators caused by water imbalance or environmental factors.

  • Recommend corrective actions for issues related to irrigation and nutrient deficiencies.

  • Utilize precision irrigation technologies (humidity sensors, tensiometers, weather stations) for data- based decision making.

  • Support trials and research projects on crop responses to water and nutrient management practices.

  • Coordinate effectively all the activities related to irrigation and fertilization taking in consideration other agronomical activities and crop needs.

  • Supervise, train and provide guidance to the employees in charge of irrigation scheduling and fertigation practices.

  • Maintain accurate records of fertilizer and water use. Prepare nutrient management reports.

  • Supervise proper use of the irrigation parts and fertilizers inventory. Assure that the inventory is sufficient to cover the demand in every season of the year.

  • Responsible for maintaining storage areas and equipment organized and in excellent operating conditions.

  • Update Standard Operational Procedures of the area according to best practices and improvements.

  • Stay updated on new technologies, research findings, and best management practices in irrigation and agronomy.

  • Follow all safety and environmental practices and procedures to prevent injuries, incidents, and ensure compliance with all environmental regulations. Collaborate in the EHS investigations process and follow all company principles and compliance programs. 

 

What Skills You Need:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Agronomy, Crop Science or related field is required. A background in Soil Sciences is preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in irrigation management, plant nutrition and crop production systems. Experience working with field crops (corn, soybean, cotton) is preferred.

  • Experience with fertigation systems, nutrient analysis, and soil/ tissue sampling.

  • Familiarity with irrigation technologies sensors, and precision agriculture tools.

  • Experience performing mathematical calculations for the application of agrochemicals.  

  • Experience supervising employees in the agricultural sector.

  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and analytical abilities; team oriented and proactive in the field.

  • Available to work on weekends and holidays.

  • Must be proficient using Microsoft Office programs, Power Apps, and other local software. Skills using technology and managing electronic devices and computer equipment.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Spanish is required.

  • Valid PR driver's license, category 4 preferred.

  • Must be willing to work independently and be able to function well in a matrix/team environment.

  • Willing and able to occasionally lift, push, or carry up to 20-50 lbs. of weight

  • Excellent leadership, communication, innovation and creativity skills, special attention to details.

  • Must be capable of working in varied ergonomic and in extreme environmental conditions for extended periods of time.
