Job Description

This position is responsible for providing instruction and support designed to prepare students for current and future success. The Agriculture Teacher provides high-quality instruction aligned to District curriculum and Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V). The teacher develops and leads a comprehensive agricultural education program integrating classroom instruction, Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs), and leadership development through National FFA Organization. The Agriculture Teacher prepares students for postsecondary education and careers in agriculture, food, and natural resources (AFNR) while promoting agricultural literacy, technical skill attainment, industry certification, and employability skills.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  1. Curriculum and Instruction
  • Teaches District-approved agricultural curriculum daily and implements school and district curricular goals aligned to AFNR career pathways.
  • Develops and implements rigorous lesson plans, demonstration plans, and instructional materials that reflect current industry standards and best practices.
  • Carries out lesson plans through developmentally appropriate learning experiences in classrooms, laboratories, shops, greenhouses, land labs, and other agricultural facilities.
  • Establishes clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects, and communicates expectations to students.
  • Provides individualized and small group instruction to differentiate for diverse student needs.
  • Guides the learning process toward mastery of learning objectives and curriculum goals.
  • Develops and administers content-specific assessments (formal and informal) to assess student competency levels.
  • Progress monitors academic, social, and behavioral growth; communicates student progress regularly with students and parents/guardians.
  • Integrates Science of Reading awareness and/or proficiency, as applicable, into instruction.
  • Fully participates in schoolwide Social Emotional Learning (SEL) initiatives.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and legally compliant student records and documentation.
  • Ensures continuity of instruction by preparing detailed plans and materials for substitute teachers.
  • Takes all reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, livestock, and facilities.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations and directs concerns to appropriate personnel when necessary.

II. Professionalism

  • Reports to work as scheduled on a regular and reliable basis.
  • Consistently models effective and productive soft skills with students, colleagues, families, and community stakeholders.
  • Maintains professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, alumni, advisory committees, and community partners.
  • Actively participates in grade-level, content-area, CTE, and district collaborative teams.
  • Participates in prescribed professional development programs and activities, including but not limited to RISE training and required state CTE updates.
  • Attends area, state, and national agriculture and CTE professional development meetings and conferences.
  • Follows all federal, state, district, and school policies and procedures.
  • Contributes to the development and continuous improvement of the school’s agricultural education program and overall CTE initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by administration.

  • Prepares students with the knowledge, technical skills, and workplace behaviors necessary to compete in a global economy.

  • Educates students about agriculture, food systems, and natural resources to enhance agricultural literacy and informed citizenship.
  • Facilitates classroom discussions and collaborative learning experiences that promote student engagement and leadership.
  • Assists students in establishing and maintaining standards of behavior to achieve an effective and safe learning environment.

IV. Career and Technical Education Excellence

  • Designs and delivers an instructional program aligned to Perkins V requirements, emphasizing high-skill, high-wage, and in-demand agricultural careers.
  • Leads and serves as advisor for the local FFA chapter, integrating leadership development as an essential component of instruction.
  • Supervises and coaches students in Career Development Events (CDEs) and Leadership Development Events (LDEs).
  • Oversees and evaluates students’ Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs, including project supervision, documentation, and recordkeeping.
  • Supervises and maintains agricultural laboratories, shops, land labs, greenhouses, and other instructional facilities used for SAEs and hands-on instruction.
  • Ensures CTE students complete aligned industry certifications and credentials when applicable.
  • Plans and conducts community engagement activities, including collaboration with agricultural advisory committees, alumni affiliates, young farmer programs, and booster organizations.
  • Prepares and submits FFA rosters, registrations, competition entries, financial documentation, and required reports accurately and promptly.
  • Maintains compliance with state CTE reporting requirements and local program accountability measures.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

The Agriculture Teacher works in a variety of instructional settings, including traditional classrooms, agricultural mechanics shops, livestock facilities, greenhouses, outdoor land laboratories, and community-based locations. Duties may include:

  • Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, and carrying materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Operating and supervising the use of agricultural equipment, power tools, welding equipment, and machinery in shop settings.
  • Teaching and supervising students during livestock handling, animal care, and exhibition, including travel to shows and competitions.
  • Driving school vehicles and/or transporting students to off-campus instructional sites, competitions, and industry experiences (in accordance with district policies and licensure requirements).
  • Working in outdoor environments and variable weather conditions.
    Exposure to dust, noise, fumes, animals, and typical agricultural shop and farm conditions.
  • The employee must demonstrate appropriate safety practices at all times and ensure student adherence to established safety protocols.

Qualifications

  • Valid state teaching license with appropriate endorsement in Agricultural Education or Career and Technical Education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of agricultural industry standards and AFNR career pathways.
  • Ability to integrate academic and technical instruction in a hands-on learning environment.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage laboratories, equipment, livestock, and program finances responsibly.
  • Willingness to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, to support FFA activities, competitions, and community engagement.
