Under the direction of the Farm Manager, provides assistance to the daily operation of the UMES farms; assists researchers with field research being conducted in plant and soil science at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore‘s Agricultural Experiment Station; sets up multiple research projects; addresses problems and/or issues that arise in the research facilities; collects and prepares water, plant, and soil samples; repairs equipment as needed so that research continues successfully; and manages research activities/operations and supervise graduate and undergraduate students. Performs other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED required with three years in agricultural work in which one year was in agricultural research required.
Bachelor’s degree in food and agricultural sciences or and three to five years of Agriculture Technician experience preferred. Preferred qualifications for the State of Maryland include Pesticide Public Agency Applicator Certificate, Nutrient Management Applicator Voucher, and a Commercial CDL Class B Driver’s License.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Must have the ability to manage and operate poultry research projects; to collect, process samples and tabulate research data; to use and troubleshoot farm equipment; to lift 50 pounds; and to program research instruments, download data from data loggers and maintain data transmission equipment or be willing to acquire those skills through training. Must have a strong commitment to research and be a self-starter. Ability to lift and transport agricultural supplies, tools and equipment to climb and perform extensive standing and walking required. Ability to wear ad work in personal protective equipment and to work in extreme weather conditions required. Must have good communication and interpersonal skills; be able to work collaboratively in a diverse workplace; and have the capacity to balance multiple projects at a time.
