The Parks Horticultural Worker will perform various horticultural and park maintenance duties in support of operations to beautify and care for Denver’s parks. These positions will focus on noxious weed management and related spray programs as well as planting and caring for flower beds in traditional urban parks and/or natural areas. These positions are ideal for those looking to expand their career options in the horticulture field.

While the full pay range of this Job Classification is $16.81 - $24.54, our target starting pay for this position is $16.81 per hour.

These positions will support parks within Denver’s East Parks Maintenance District (see district map here: https://www.denvergov.org/content/dam/denvergov/Portals/747/documents/parks/DPR-maintenance-districts.pdf  ) and will report to one of the following locations in Denver:

  • City Park at 2100 N Steele St
  • Congress Park at 2608 E 8th Ave
  • Crestmoor Park at 99 S Monaco Pkwy
  • Yale/Open Space at 10300 E Yale Ave

Skills to be developed and utilized:

  • Learn to utilize and maintain various hand-powered tools and motorized equipment in a safe and efficient manner
  • Working outdoors alongside other team members and performing lead work over less seasoned workers to implement best practices in horticulture:
  • Assisting and learning from experienced Park Horticulturists
  • Arranging, planting and caring for flower beds in traditional parks
  • Natural and riparian areas management and restoration including noxious weed management, and native plant identification, cultivation and care
  • Ensuring safe and effective application of pesticides and fertilizers; monitoring and assessing prescribed applications
  • Related landscape maintenance work in related parks areas such as trimming, mowing, de-weeding, debris removal
  • Perform related park maintenance tasks trash collection, bathroom maintenance and cleaning, vandalism repair/graffiti removal, and snow removal operations

This is an on-call position which will work no more than 39 hours per week and is not eligible for benefits. On-call positions may have routine or variable work schedules.

Experience and comfort with pesticide and fertilizer application
Knowledge and experience with noxious weed management, natural areas, and flower bed management

Education Requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.

Experience Requirement: One (1) year of work experience performing cultivation and care of flowers and plants.

Education & Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements

Licensure & Certification: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
