Maintenance Person IV (Parks Maintenance North Zone)

Under minimal supervision, to perform turf and horticultural maintenance tasks, and skilled equipment operation, maintenance, and related crew leader functions; coordinates and performs a variety of maintenance duties on urban park properties, and performs related duties as required.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Performs repairs, construction and maintenance of the City of Boulder Parks, properties and areas under minimal supervision from the supervisor.
• As assigned by the Parks Supervisor, this includes directing and overseeing work and performance of MPIII, MPII, MPI, Temporary and Seasonal Employees.
• Maintains and renovates turf areas and general park areas.
• Controls, repairs, and assists in installation of sprinklers, irrigation piping, and other irrigation system components.
• Maintains and repairs shelters, playgrounds and other recreational facilities, fences, trails, picnic tables, benches, drinking fountains, and retaining walls using a variety of carpentry and minor electrical and plumbing skills.
• Plans, plants, and removes annual flower beds and other plantings.
• Tills, fertilizes, and mulches flower beds and other plantings; chip mulches trees, shrubs, and other plantings.
• Prunes trees and shrubs, assists Forestry staff in ensuring trees are maintained in a safe and healthy condition.
• Performs weed control in turf, flower beds and other plantings, shrub areas, and general park areas.
• Analyzes site conditions, plans, prioritizes, assigns and coordinates maintenance, repair and construction work.
• Monitors work in progress to identify problems and to ensure organized and efficient work and quality work product.
• Oversees and tracks training programs related to personal, public and equipment safety, horticulture, irrigation and turf practices, and wellness.
• Facilitates good communication with co-workers, supervisors and the public.
• Maintains records of work performed, checks that documents regarding work performed are correct for work group, assists with monitoring budgets, maintains records of materials and supplies, and orders and purchases supplies through a variety of methods including in the field data collection.
• Ensures that resource conservation techniques are implemented throughout area (trip reduction, composting, air and water quality protection).
• Remains generally alert to conditions and events occurring in the park indicating misuse and anticipated or needed repairs.
• Must be able to work in a team environment.

2. Acts as the Crew leader for MPIII, MPII, MPI, seasonal and temporary employees:
• Coordinates with the Park Supervisor to set work schedules and daily priorities for staff.
• Provide work direction and instruction including task assignment, work instructions.
• Attempts to correct problems with performance or work habits.
• Provides feedback to manager on performance for the purpose of performance reviews, disciplinary situations or for the recognition of commendable work.
• May assist the supervisor in the hiring process.

3. Coordinate with the Urban Resources section concerning weed management and tree maintenance.

• Noxious week management
• Tree health disease
• Winter watering

4. Oversees workgroup snow removal functions. Coordinates with on-call snow supervisors to ensure effective snow removal operations.

5. Properly and safely uses a variety of machinery, equipment and tools to accomplish tasks and trains others in their safe and appropriate use. Performs routine maintenance on related machinery, equipment and tools.

6. Stays up to date on job related issues such as technical procedures, safety issues, product development and technology improvements.

7. May work irregular hours, weekends, evenings, holidays, and or emergencies as required to respond to Parks system problems including, irrigation system problems, site safety issues, snow removal etc.

8. Coordinate with Risk Management to ensure appropriate work group staff training personal and public safety.

9. Other:
• Performs related duties as required by management to meet the needs of the city.
• Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and reports all accidents and damage to city property.
• Responsible for knowing and complying with all City and departmental policies; and participating in professional training and development.
• Performs all duties in an ethical and objective manner with both the public's and the city's employees' interest in mind.
• Must be able to work in a changing environment with the focus towards the delivery of enhanced customer service and utilization of resources in a safe and effective manner.


High School diploma or GED. A minimum of 5 years on the job experience in the field or turf maintenance, horticulture, or closely related field. Demonstrated ability to lead and direct the work of others to include performance feedback under minimal supervision from a supervisor, and to plan schedules to meet objectives. Training, and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge of turf care and general park maintenance practices. Experience in care of urban parks or other public settings. Knowledge of accepted turf maintenance practices and principles, experience with related machines, equipment and tools. Ability to perform strenuous physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment. Ability to stand, bend and kneel frequently and or for extended periods. Upper body strength to lift and carry items up to 60 pounds on a frequent basis. Ability to utilize any required safety equipment including but not limited to normal personal protective equipment. Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. Ability to follow OSHA regulations. Ability to obtain CPR certification. Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively. Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with co-workers and the public including excellent customer service skills with the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public in stressful situations. Willingness and ability to work irregular hours, extended hours, weekends, holidays, evenings and emergencies as required. Valid Colorado driver's license. Have and maintain acceptable motor vehicle record and criminal conviction history.
