Interpretive Specialist for Livestock & Agriculture  Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Historic Site Olathe, Kansas  (mahaffie.org)

Responsible for livestock care and handling, stagecoach rides and agricultural programming at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site.  Operates and maintains two stagecoaches and other animal-drawn conveyances and equipment. Provides proper care for large and small farm animals year-round. Offers historical interpretation to the public on the use of farm animals and farm life in the mid-19th century. Supervises and trains part-time/seasonal employees engaged in same duties. Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license.  The position is full-time with a competitive benefit package.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a 19th century agricultural living history program that includes three teams of draft horses, a team of oxen, sheep, goats and chickens.
  • Ensure animals receive proper feed and daily care, exercise, medical care, and training year-round. Purchase feed and hay for all livestock and maintain an adequate feed supply at all times.
  • Safely drive the site's stagecoaches, carriages, wagons, and sleds to offer rides for the public. Properly train others to do the same.
  • Offer plowing, planting, harvest, threshing, milking and other agricultural demonstrations appropriate to 1855 through 1875 with draft and dairy animals and period farm implements.
  • Take an active role in the site's overall interpretive & living history programs along with co-workers.
  • Care for and maintain horse-drawn vehicles, implements, and harness as well as a tractor, skid steer and manure spreader needed for manure removal and maintenance of pastures and pens. Assist in maintenance of outbuildings and fences (modern and historic) associated with the agricultural operation.
  • Supervise, train and provide performance management of part-time/seasonal employees to accomplish the above duties and responsibilities.
  • Work a varied schedule that includes weekends and some evenings to accomplish the above duties and responsibilities.

Experience:  2-3 years of demonstrated experience in a similar position or with similar duties required.

Education:  Bachelor's Degree in History, Museum Studies, Public History, Agricultural Science/Education, Animal Husbandry or related studies preferred.

Supplemental Information:

  • Successful applicant must be able to operate animal-drawn vehicles, and will be at ease handling and driving large animals around the public and training others to do the same.
  • Must be dependable, out-going and team oriented, possess top customer service and interpersonal skills and be willing and able to work a very flexible schedule that will change with the season and includes weekends and some holidays, and evenings.  This position is currently non-exempt (not salaried) and receives paid overtime. 
  • Knowledge of historic agricultural processes desirable, as are skills and abilities in operating and maintaining modern farm equipment (i.e.  tractors, skid steers, haying implements) along with 19th century equipment (i.e. plows, threshing machines, reapers, sickle-bar mower).  Strong mechanical and carpentry skills are a plus, as are contemporary welding skills, and/or 19th century blacksmithing and woodworking skills.  Harness-making/repair skills also a plus.  Must be able to safely transport animals and animal-drawn vehicles in trailers pulled by pickup truck.
  • Must be willing to dress in 19th century period clothing (provided) and wear it in the manner prescribed, and able to accomplish rigorous labor out doors in heat and cold.  Must be able to climb ladders, to safely climb into the driver's seat of 19th century stagecoaches (approx. 8 ft in height) and wagons (6 ft). 
  • A background investigation, post-offer strength/agility/fitness test, physical exam and drug screen required.
