HORTICULTURIST duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Individual will assist and work directly in the execution of turfgrass agronomic related duties with various City organizations and City staff
  • Coordinate with suppliers, contractors and City staff at various sites utilizing proper knowledge, practices and principles of horticulture and turf agronomics
  • Coordinate turf and/or landscape design and installation
  • Design and coordinate short-term and long-term turfgrass plans for high school stadium fields, City athletic sports parks and Special Event parks throughout the City
  • Maintain proper documentation and usage logs for pesticide applications
  • Maintain proper documentation records required for all state agencies and provide timely reports as required
  • Utilize necessary computers and computer software as needed to complete tasks and assignments
  • Provide budgetary support and ability to provide cost estimates pertinent to managing unit
  • Assist in formulating Nutrient Management Plan for City
  • Identify turfgrass problems, formulate and execute corrective actions based upon knowledge of plant biology and proper turfgrass practices
  • Oversee and/or apply pesticides utilizing safe industry practices
  • Select appropriate turfgrass materials and supplies, and procure, maintain, issue, inventory, and account for same
  • Calibrate and maintain pesticide application equipment
  • May supervise assigned personnel
  • Work closely with other bureaus within Landscape Management Division to provide expertise, technical training, and help create and implement training programs for the proper and safe use of pesticides.

Work is performed outside in all weather conditions including temperature extremes, and involves lifting and carrying equipment, tools and materials weighing 50-75 pounds. This is an Alpha 1 position; individual is required to work in storm and emergency conditions to provide any necessary services such as storm clean-up, and snow or sand removal.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to seven (7) years, including one (1) in a supervisory capacity, in the field of horticulture, utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned. This position may be designated as a safety sensitive position and be subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the Citys operational status. May require a Commercial drivers license.
