Perform technical and physical labor and provide leadership in the landscaping of public areas, special horticultural areas, and perform other related semi-skilled and skilled work dealing with Parks and Open Space Department objectives. This position must work well independently and with teams, while providing customer service and human relations skills, which support the City of Brighton's mission and values.

This position works under general supervision of the Open Space Manager or other assigned department leader. The Horticulturalist supervises full- or part-time employees as assigned.


  • Performs horticulture-related maintenance on flower and shrub beds, including diagnosing and treating disease and pest issues.
  • Prepares and plants annual and perennial flower beds.
  • Organizes and prioritizes daily tasks for self and seasonal employees. Trains seasonal employees in proper maintenance practice of all types of plant material and proper pesticide application methods.
  • Supervises and manages the weed management program for the City of Brighton for all shrub-beds located in public parks and public places.
  • Safely uses various herbicides.
  • Operates trucks, tractors, and other related equipment as required.
  • Works with community groups and individuals on matters of horticultural interest. This
    may also include public education on various horticulture topics.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.


Knowledge of:

  • Propagation, planting, cultivation, pruning, and maintenance of plants, shrubs, flowers, trees, and lawns, including proper soil mixtures, fertilization, insect, and disease control.
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
  • The importance of "xeriscaping" and why it should be incorporated into Brighton's overall landscape theme.
  • Safety procedures common to work assignments
  • Methods used to maintain areas and facilities, including equipment and their care and use.

Ability to:

  • Identify most insects and plants that can be found in Brighton, including weed identification.
  • Communicate effectively with a variety of people on a variety of levels.
  • Direct the work of others.

High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience performing landscape maintenance and repair. Experience in supervising seasonal staff is preferred.

An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Must have the ability to perform heavy manual labor: shoveling, digging, lifting, pushing, pulling, and dragging. Lift and carry up to 80 pounds. Stoop, bend, and crouch for extended periods of time. Work in confined spaces. Work in extreme temperature conditions including extreme heat (>100 degrees) and extreme cold (<10 degrees).


  • Must possess a valid Colorado's driver's license with a safe driving record
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Certified Operator, Agriculture Pesticide Applicator's License with an Ornamental endorsement, Colorado Department of Agriculture, within six months of hire.
  • Ability to complete FEMA IS 100 and IS 700 training within six (6) months of hire.
