Horticulturist and Irrigation Specialist

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport

Required to perform horticulture practices to maintain and care for the large collection of trees, shrubs, groundcovers, flowers, and ornamental plants at the airport. Required to perform design, installation, maintenance and repair of existing and future irrigation systems. Assists management in providing knowledge of best practices for landscaping, irrigation and overall appearance of all KCAB owned assets. Required to operate gasoline and large diesel powered machinery in a safe and appropriate manner and other various duties as assigned.

This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the department.

  • Ensure plant material on our customer properties are installed and maintained at the highest level.
  • Perform duties and be able to provide oversight for proper landscaping application, irrigation, pruning, fertilization, etc.
  • Performs plan reviews and makes revisions on proposed irrigation designs to ensure that they meet KCAB specifications and standards.
  • Pest and disease prevention, identification and treatment.
  • Assess turf appearance; identify problems; suggest treatment solutions.
  • Ensure good landscape establishment, i.e., specific means by which newly installed landscape will develop and thrive within the first year of installation.
  • Inspect, observe, assess, monitor and offer solutions to correct deficiencies and maintain the landside of the airport to the highest standards.
  • Research / stay abreast of current trends and best practices in the green industry.
  • Utilizes our Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to document and perform inspections.
  • Performs snow and ice removal.
  • Assists in emergencies on CVG Airport property 24/7.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Certificate or Associates degree in Horticulutre or similar major and three years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.


  • Maintain Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) clearance
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (or ability to acquire Class A CDL within 6 months of hire date)
  • Kentucky Pesticide Application License required within 90 days of employment
  • Certified Irrigation Technician (CIT) is required within the first year in this position
  • Horticulture, Turf Management and/or Landscaping Design degree or certification


  • Irrigation systems from design, installation and maintenance;
  • Horticultural processes and operations;
  • Strong horticultural knowledge of annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, turf, etc.;
  • Customer service requirements for organization;
  • Operation of gas and diesel powered equipment;
  • Personal protective equipment;
  • Work zone safety in traffic/roadways situations.

  • Demonstrated skill in data entry.


  • Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
  • Heavy Work: exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
