Summary/Objective
The Horticulture and Orchid Specialist is responsible for designing, planning and maintaining
Vizcaya’s horticultural and orchid displays, orchid and associated living collections, and will
provide effective and at times independent day to day horticultural management and uphold
Vizcaya’s standards of horticultural practices. Daily duties include ongoing specialized
horticulturally related tasks consisting of orchid culture, living collections, indoor landscapes,
Vizcaya’s IPM program, floral displays, and greenhouse management.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position supervises a crew of volunteers as required.

Essential Functions
The employee will ensure effective daily horticultural operations which will include:

  • Recommend, implement and monitor Integrated Pest Management, which includes
    compliance with applicable laws
  • Oversee horticultural and landscape care of the David A. Klein Orchidarium
  • Development and expansion of permanent orchid collections and temporary displays; guide and direct collections acquisition.
  • Create orchid related programming and educational opportunities
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures for horticultural practices and the
    cultivation of orchids, such as application of pesticides, herbicides, and liquid and granular
    fertilizers.
  • Manage greenhouse operations including systems and structure maintenance, repair, and
    improvements.
  • Supervise crews of volunteers as required
  • Bi-monthly creation and upkeep of floral and orchid arrangements and displays

Competency or position requirements
The Horticulture and Orchid Specialist position requires technical education, knowledge, and
experience in fine gardening, horticultural display, orchid culture, and estate or public garden
maintenance. The Specialist will have experience in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) guidelines
and safe, effective application of insecticides and pesticides, and will possess the ability to recognize pests and diseases of orchids and associated plants. Knowledge of tropical and subtropical orchids and epiphytes is required. Candidates must possess a working knowledge of plant identification methods. Demonstrated greenhouse management and nursery management experience is desired.

At most times the Orchid Specialist will be required to work with little to no supervision, and must
be able to exercise independent judgment and make independent decisions.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

Employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, and crouch. The
employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 40 lbs. and work outside in varying climatic
conditions that include excessive heat and humidity, and must be able to stand for long periods of
time and safely traverse uneven surfaces. The ability to work with typical landscape maintenance
equipment and materials is essential. Daily duties will require visitor interaction on a regular basis, and a standard code of conduct will be required.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Position is full time, generally Monday through Friday from 7-3:30. Occasional evening and
weekend work may be required upon request.

Travel
Occasional local and regional travel may be required.

Education and Experience
A minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Landscape Maintenance, Horticulture, or closely related
field with three years’ orchid care and horticulturally related experience is required. A Bachelor’s
degree with at least one year professional experience is preferred. Additional experience or
education in floral arranging and display is desired.

Certifications Required

  • Must either possess or have the ability to obtain a State of FL driver license within 6 months of hire, and ability to obtain Florida Public Applicator’s pesticide license within 6 months of hire is required.
  • Best Practices Management certifications and Florida Nursery & Landscape Growers Association
  • Certified Horticulturist program completion will be required as training opportunities become
    available.
