The North Carolina Museum of Art is a division of the Department of Natural & Cultural Resources. The statutory purpose of the Museum is to acquire, preserve, and exhibit works of art for the education and enjoyment of the people of the State, and to conduct programs of education, research, and publication designed to encourage an interest in and an appreciation of art on the part of the people of the State [GS 140-5.12]. The state's art collection spans more than 5,000 years, from ancient Egypt to the present, making it one of the premier art museums in the Southeast. With a 164-acre campus, the museum also has the distinction of being one of the largest museum art parks in the world with an extensive trail system that connects to the 63-mile Capital Area Greenway through the city of Raleigh. Facilities include two main museum buildings, a large outdoor performing arts facility, parking lots, bike trails, and greenways.

The Horticultural Technician is responsible for the care and continued development of the gardens within the Museum of Art Park. Garden maintenance includes preserving the beauty, health, and safety of the gardens.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Responsibility for water feature maintenance; irrigation installation/repair; pesticide application; watering; pruning; fertilizing; and identifying diseased plants and using Integrated Pest Management.
  • Performing proper trail installation and maintenance practices.
  • Operating light and heavy equipment such as bobcats, forklifts, mini excavators, dump trucks, and tractors.
  • Responsible for maintenance of small engine and equipment such as diagnosis, minor repairs, and oil and filter changes.
  • Performing snow and ice removal as needed.
  • Working safely in a public park around children, bikers, and large groups.

Physical Requirements:

  • Working outside under all weather conditions.
  • Working weekends and evenings as needed.
  • Lifting up to 30 pounds of aggregate material to heigh of 18 inches and transport it laterally an average distance of 4.5 feet on a frequent basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Demonstrated experience in plant maintenance procedures used in landscape installation and grounds maintenance, including pruning, weeding, planting, tree care, mowing, and mulching.
  • Proven ability to recognize landscape issues, assess plant health, and experience to take corrective action to maintain a formal garden or public park.
  • Demonstrated experience in turf management including; identifying common weeds, diseases, and procedures necessary to maintain high quality turfgrass.
  • Demonstrated experience in trail maintenance and storm water management around infrastructure such as trails and sculptures.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds of aggregate material to a height of 18 inches and transport it laterally an average distance of 4.5 feet on a frequent basis.
  • Demonstrated experience in safe operation, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of heavy equipment such as skid steer, forklifts, mini excavators, dump trucks, tractors, mowers, golf carts, and/or RTV vehicles and using various attachments.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings as needed.
  • Ability to work outside under all weather conditions.
  • Currently has or able to obtain NC Pesticide License.

Management Preferences:
Six years of experience in grounds maintenance and the safe operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Graduation from a two-year technical college with a degree in horticulture, landscape gardening, natural resources management, or closely related field and one year in landscape maintenance; or, graduation from high school and three years of experience, or, an equivalent combination of training and experience requirements.
