The primary purpose of this position is to oversee the implementation of the Universityâ's irrigation efforts through the supervision of two to three irrigation specialists, ensuring high-quality care of the NCSU grounds. The Grounds and Building Services unit provides an array of programs, services and support to the University's 2,000 plus acres of campus landscape. The Horticultural Specialist Supervisor will be responsible for assessing irrigation systems for proper function, safety, health, and aesthetic quality. Ability to maintain and utilize equipment used in the care and maintenance of irrigation systems. This may include the use of gas powered equipment as well as hand tools, sprayers, and spreaders. Uses a proactive approach to leadership and assists staff in professional growth and development. Finds solutions to problems in the field through research and collaboration. Utilizes University laboratory resources to assess soil conditions and disease issues and develop course of action for response. Provides leadership and direction to unit in oversight of the care and maintenance of the campus irrigation systems. Responsible for the installation and maintenance of the 56 irrigation systems on all University grounds. It will also include the new irrigation systems that will be installed with new buildings that are being built on University grounds. NCSU has 7 large irrigation systems that are on the City of Raleigh reclaimed water line. NCSU is responsible for a reclaimed monthly report of quantity of water used. Through the use of a computer software, irrigation is centrally controlled for scheduling routine and unscheduled run times for irrigation systems on the University grounds. Electrical trouble shooting and installation of irrigation controllers. Locate and repair wire breaks, faults and lost valves. Monitor irrigation systems, trucks, and equipment in order to identify, report, and/or resolve potential concerns before they lead to an accident or major equipment failure. Must attend and maintain specialized training to keep certifications up-to-date. Ability to read and understand architectural irrigation plans.

Minimum Qualifications:High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: North Carolina Pesticide License may be required and can be obtained within six months of employment; North Carolina Commercial Driver's License may be required. Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters. Experience with horticultural practices, irrigation system management, and landscape design. Position serves in a mandatory role and employee must work during adverse weather conditions and may be required to work even if the University is closed to normal operations. Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations.
