Horticultural Specialist

The primary purpose of the position is to provide hands-on technical expertise and instruction in applied horticultural sciences to improve the care and culture of the diverse plant life within the NC State University campus. This position is required to apply sound horticultural practices and integrated pest management procedures on the Centennial campus and serve as an area plant care expert.

The Horticultural Specialist will ensure that all service agreements with plant maintenance responsibilities are met according to the contracts with our campus customers. (i.e. fertilization, maintenance, pruning and soil testing). The position fields evaluations of plant conditions and makes recommendations to the supervisor for improvement, monitors and identifies diseased plants, as well as analyzes the results of testing and corrects the problem. The Horticultural Specialist will act as a liaison for Grounds Management with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to find solutions to any unknown plant problems. Position prepares detailed monthly reports to management on grounds activities and makes recommendations for plant needs. This position acts as a training resource, based on knowledge and experience in different aspects of plant care for the Grounds Maintenance staff. Additionally, the position will be required to troubleshoot irrigation issues and maintenance concerns.

Minimum Qualifications: High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: North Carolina Pesticide License may be required and can be obtained within six months of employment; North Carolina Commercial Driver's License may be required. Must be able to effectively communicate verbally with supervisors and the general public. Position should be able to understand verbal and written instructions regarding work assignments and other matters. Position serves in a critical role requiring the employee to potentially work during adverse weather conditions even if the University is closed to normal operations. Lift up to 60 lbs.
