SUMMARY

The Stuart Land and Cattle Company of Virginia, Inc (SLCC) is seeking a Herdsmen. We are looking for a self-motivated, teachable, and hard-working candidate with a shared commitment to our vision for delivering excellence in animal health, beef quality, and pasture management. We are looking for career-oriented candidates who are positioned to grow with our company.The Herdsman will work under the General Manager primarily at the Clifton Farm (8,000 acres). Located on 16,000 acres in scenic Southwest Virginia’s Russell, Tazewell, and Washington counties, SLCC has a 1,450 cow herd and is one of the largest cow/calf operations in Virginia. Our company has a rich history of leadership in the cattle industry and a deep commitment to natural resource conservation.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Show interest in and strive to accomplish ranch objectives.
  • Work with manager to maintain BCS on cow herd and meet target gains on stockers and replacement heifers during all development phases.
  • Timely accomplishment of the activities listed on the Cattle Calendar of Events.
  • Operate at or below annual cow, stocker, or replacement heifer cost goals as defined by the General Manager and Ranch Manager.
  • Work with cattle manager to develop and follow an annual grazing plan.
  • Fencing maintenance and construction.
  • Continual improvement through professional development, training and education.
  • Ensure required reports, including inventory, are maintained and accurate in a timely manner.
  • Maintain and continuously improve property, keeping all working facilities, homes, and other areas in “Stuart Land & Cattle Standards.”
  • Take accountability for workload and be a team player.
  • Represent the ranch professionally at all times.

  • Ability to work by yourself with minimal supervision
  • Open-minded with ability to troubleshoot problems
  • Attraction to ranching operations with high level of curiosity and teachability
  • Willingness to maintain a positive attitude in a demanding work environment.
