A non-supervisory position in grounds management, Gardeners will enable the furthering of Vizcaya’s horticultural mission through effective horticultural display and landscape management.

Supervisory Responsibility
This is a non-supervisory position.

Essential Functions

Employee will be required to conduct and record under supervision fertilizer, pesticide and herbicide applications, and will be required to maintain, under supervision, all landscaped areas and natural areas estate-wide. Daily duties will require visitor interaction on a regular basis, and a standard code of conduct will be required. Duties will include:
 Mowing and string trimming
 Weeding, mulching, and brush chipping
 Litter management
 Operating and performing routine maintenance on power equipment
 Must be able to perform strenuous manual labor, including frequent lifting/carrying/transporting heavy loads up to 50 lbs.
 Required to work in all weather conditions in all seasons
 Related job duties as assigned

Gardeners are critical part of the Horticulture team, fulfilling duties required to ensure all landscapes and natural areas are maintained to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens’ standards of display and horticultural excellence.

Competency or position requirements
Gardeners require knowledge and experience in landscape management practices, including a working knowledge of turf management, display horticulture, and Integrated Pest Management. The ability to work with typical landscape maintenance equipment (small tractor, mowers, tillers, string-trimmers, pruning/cutting equipment, hand-tools) is essential. Daily duties will require visitor interaction on a regular basis, and a standard code of conduct is required. A basic knowledge of subtropical and tropical landscape plants and landscape management practices, native ecosystems, and plant identification is required. Gardeners participate in daily hands-on horticultural and grounds maintenance related activities. A basic knowledge of irrigation systems in desired Work Environment/Physical Demands.
The person in this position must be able to carry up to 50 lbs. and work outside in varying climatic conditions that include excessive heat and humidity; and must be able to stand for long periods of time and safely traverse uneven surfaces.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position, the hours are generally Monday through Friday 6:30am – 3:00pm, and the employee must be able to work a flexible schedule to include occasional evening and weekend work.

No travel is required for this position.

Education and Experience
Must possess a minimum two years of experience in ground and turf maintenance, including knowledge of the maintenance and operation of landscape equipment. Horticulture coursework is a plus and an Associate’s Degree is desired.
Certifications Required
Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license or be able to acquire one within 60 days, and must obtain pesticide applicator’s license within 6 months of hire.
