The Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources & Design at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a Farm Supervisor. The Farm Supervisor has routine repetitive duties, in addition to heavy manual work associated with quality care and the maintenance of livestock, and farm equipment and physical facilities related to livestock production. The Farm Supervisor will supervise farm workers, graduate students, and student workers for the daily management and care of livestock, and duties associated with livestock facilities maintenance and operation. The Farm Supervisor typically receives moderate to limited supervision from the Farm Manager, and functions as a team member along with the Farm Manager in identifying and prioritizing tasks related to livestock care and management, and the daily tasks associated with livestock production, research and teaching operations.

In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:

  • Provide direct supervision and oversight to farm workers, graduate students and student workers for the daily management and care of livestock and facilities used for livestock related teaching, research and outreach at the Morgantown Farms.
  • Coordinate and execute the job functions related to livestock care, housing and management.
  • Perform daily duties that include but are not limited to livestock feeding, bedding, housing, water, movement among paddocks and fields.
  • Visually inspects livestock for obvious health issues and contacts appropriate veterinary staff as needed.
  • Assure the compliance with safety procedures, standard operating procedures, institutional animal care and use protocol and appropriate livestock handling techniques.
  • Be familiar with pasture management and forage crop production including strategic mowing, estimating pasture production for livestock stocking, and application of nutrients including lime, fertilizer and manure.
  • Perform security functions for farm property; ensures fences and gates are in good working condition, all livestock are accounted for and census data entered in daily check logs.
  • Perform maintenance activities such as visually inspecting farm equipment for normal wear, lubricating equipment, etc. to insure the equipment is safe and efficient for operating.
  • Operate a wide range of equipment used on a farm, such as mixers, heaters, ventilation equipment, watering equipment, sprayers, common equipment found at a farm, pumps, gauges, welders, trucks (up to 2 tons), front loaders, scrapers, unloading equipment, balers, etc.


  • Requires Master’s Degree in animal sciences or related field; experience with livestock husbandry
  • Two to three (2-3) years experience in related field; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities associated with the position of Farm Supervisor


  • Possession of a valid/current driver’s license; CDL may be required.
  • CITI animal handler training (Animal Care and Use Committee Requirement)
  • Beef Quality Assurance Training
  • Enrollment in WVU Occupation Health's Animal Handling Mentoring
  • EHS safety requirements and training.
  • If applying pesticides, will be required to have or obtain a pesticide applicators license.
  • Must be able to obtain a WVU P-Card.
