Splitlog Farm is an urban farm located in the urban core of Kansas City, KS; operated as a part of CHWC, Inc.’s Community Building and Engagement program. The farm includes vegetable growing beds, an orchard, hoop houses and an outdoor classroom. Produce from the farm is distributed to residents of the surrounding neighborhood and utilized in a Farm to School program at local schools.

Job Description:

The Farm Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day growing operations of Splitlog Farm. Working with the Farm Coordinator, the Farm Manager will develop a growing plan for the farm that meets the needs of the schools receiving produce from the farm, through the Farm to School program, and increases access to healthy food for Bethany neighborhood residents. The Farm Manager will maximize the resources and expertise offered by community organizations for the benefit of the farm.

This position is part time, non-exempt, with the potential to become full time as the program expands. Hours will vary according to the seasonal needs of the farm.

Job Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Work with the Farm Coordinator to develop a planting and harvesting plan
  • Connect with schools who will receive produce to ensure crops are grown that work well in the cafeteria and that logistics are coordinated (day of harvest, preparation methods, refrigeration/storage needs, etc.)
  • Determine garden and orchard maintenance needs (weeding, mulching, etc.) and schedule
  • Purchase supplies needed for the farm
  • Work with Farm Coordinator to recruit and schedule volunteers for help with any maintenance projects
  • Coordinate and direct the work of the volunteers

This position requires typical physical demands for farm labor, including:

  • Walking,
  • Standing,
  • Reaching,
  • Stooping,
  • Squatting, and
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds
  • This position is subject to environmental conditions such as cold, hot, humid, windy, or wet conditions on uneven surfaces
  • Approximately 90% of work is outdoors

Job Qualifications:

  • Growing experience – vegetable, fruit, hydroponics
  • Volunteer management experience
  • Good organizational skills
  • Experience with or desire to work in urban core
  • Experience or desire to teach children
  • Bilingual – Spanish, preferred
  • Wyandotte Community resident preferred
