Farm Hand/Cheese making apprentice

Moon Hill Dairy

Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Deadline Mar 01, 2020
Job Type Full Time

Moon Hill Dairy is a grass-based dairy, grazing on 240  acres in NW Colorado, just outside of Steamboat Springs. A sustainable approach is taken to managing pastures and all animal husbandry. With the milk of our small herd, we work hard to turn it all into the tastiest cheese possible 2 -4 times a week, and this is where we need your help. We are seeking a cheese assistant to start Mid April ideally.

You will be exposed to the world of farmstead cheese making from the ground up. Learn cheese processes - pasteurizing, safety protocols and HACCP familiarity, handling the curd, basic milk/cheese chemistry,  plus the crucial work of affinage. While some work will be side by side with our cheese makers, you will be given many tasks to be done independently once you've been trained.
No prior experience is required, but experience with food prep, cheese work or familiarity with farm life is encouraged.

You will learn not only cheesemaking, but also skills in the dairy and farming itself. You will also spend time learning the essentials of wholesale work, cutting and packaging orders for delivery week-to-week. You will also be expected to attend and help prep for events occasionally. All of these are fun ways to meet the people who eat and appreciate your work, as well as being a good way to make connections within the local farming and sustainability community.

Housing available:

We have a bedroom available in our on-farm cottage on the 2nd floor.  The office is below, and a shared kitchen downstairs, a living room to r&r on the 2nd floor.  This first floor of this building is public, so cleanliness and neatness are expected.  Space includes use of a garden space if you like.

You should have your own car and a valid drivers license.

Stipend: We provide a $1000/month stipend plus housing and a 30% staff discount on all products sold in our farmstore. Milk and cheese will be available to you too, of course. Interns are expected to work 5 full days per week that will amount to 40-50 hours.  COMPENSATION$1000 monthly stipend plus shared housing only yards away from where you work. Some free meat and cheese available with the job too.
