Description of Work Unit

Eagle County is a rural resort mountain community on the western slope of Colorado. With a population of 52,197, it is located in the heat of the Rocky Mountain, approximately 100 miles west of Denver. Most of the population resides in the Eagle River Valley; however the county also has population centers in the roaring Fork Valley along Highway 82 which includes the residential communities of Basalt and El Jebel. Eagle County has an incredible geographic diversity covering over 1,694 square miles, 80 percent which is federally owned. The economy revolves around tourism and recreation with a growing local food movement. Typical of the mountain resort lifestyle, the cost of living in Eagle County is higher than metropolitan or suburban living. Approximately 7.9% of Eagle County families live below the poverty guidelines, just under the state average of 11%. CSU Extension develops programs extensively within the Latinx community, which is one of the fastest growing populations in the county representing 30% of the residents. There are numerous golf courses, a large number of landscapers and professional gardeners in the county. Position Summary

To provide leadership, organization, implementation and direction in the development of educational programs in horticulture and small acreage management in Eagle County.

Required Job Qualifications

• Completed master’s degree. 
• Degree must have been conferred in horticulture, agriculture, or closely related field.
• Ability to communicate through teaching, public speaking/presentation and writing as demonstrated through application materials and experience. 
• Demonstrated experience working with people as individuals and in groups; ability to forge equitable and successful partnerships with other professionals and organizations.
• Demonstrated use of technology in managing and/or delivering educational programs.
• Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications

• Knowledge of season Extension practices (related to small scale vegetable production).
• Professional experience in horticulture including pesticide use, organic production and rules, pest identification, etc.
• Professional experience in assisting small acreage residents with management of pastures, livestock, and natural resources.
• Understanding of rural resort issues, programming opportunities, and political frameworks.
• An entrepreneurial spirit that is able to maintain flexibility to address programming and partnership collaborations. 
• Training or experience in marketing and promoting programs or services; demonstrated ability to work effectively with the media, including television, radio, print, and the internet.
• Familiarity with small agriculture business management strategies. 
• Familiarity with Extension, Colorado Master Gardener Program, Native Plant Master Program, and the land-grant system.
• Experience/knowledge of high altitude semi-arid climates, soils, hardy plant varieties and associated pests.
• Ability to speak Spanish.
• Successful experience in grant attainment or other forms of revenue generation for educational programs.

Essential Duties

Program Planning, Development, Delivery, Evaluation and 

• Provide educational programming in horticulture and small acreage management.
• Manage the Eagle County horticultural program to include the Colorado Master Gardener volunteer program, general public and green industry education and provide other horticulture technical assistance.
• Supervise and facilitate the maintenance of the variety of gardens at the CSU Extension office
• Provide subject matter expertise and program support for small acreage management issues such as pastures, livestock and natural resources.
• Conduct plant diagnostics for residents.
• Provide support to 4-H youth development programs consistent with areas of expertise.

Initiate and Develop Relationships and Partnerships

• Serve as technical resource to local advisory groups in the areas of local food production projects, including technical feasibility and policy issues that arise.

Volunteer Recruitment, Development and Management

• Manage an active Colorado Master Gardener volunteer program including volunteer recruitment, selection, orientation, education, motivation, evaluation, recognition and support. Prepare Colorado Master Gardeners to cooperate with community organizations to enhance horticultural education.
