PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Responsible for overseeing the training, admission, care and adoption of Lollypop Farm equine animals. Provide daily leadership to equine staff and volunteers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Evaluate horses and determine training and rehabilitation for each horse, monitor and record progress
  • Hire, schedule training, and discipline of all equine staff
  • Develop and Enforce feeding and cleaning schedules
  • Maintain equipment
  • Dispense and apply prescribed medications and treatments with assistance from the Stable Manager
  • Develop all training and exercise routines
  • Ensure training is humane, natural, and productive
  • Manage waste disposal
  • Arrange and oversee vet visits, worming and vaccinations
  • Supervise and model and teach customer service skills and professionalism
  • Supervise equine care. Examine animals to ensure their well-being, enrichment and veterinary care
  • Ensure that all animals are cared for and handled in a humane manner
  • Ensure that the equine staff is keeping stable and arena areas clean and orderly
  • Evaluate animals for adoption, rescue, foster care and euthanasia
  • Maintain pasture, fences, and ensure standard operating procedures are followed
  • Select, train, coach and evaluate equine staff
  • Ensure that the equine areas are clean and orderly
  • Ensure that all equine staff adheres to all Lollypop Farm’s operating and employment policies. Interpret company policies to workers and enforce safety regulations and dress code
  • Facilitate problem resolution and emergency management with the general public and equine staff
  • Promote teamwork within the farm, as well as across departments
  • Ensure that record keeping systems are current and accurate
  • Carry out responsibilities in accordance with the company’s policies and applicable state and
  • Federal laws
  • Work with development to earn grants, laisse with donors, and promote other philanthropic motives
  • Keep detailed records of department statistics
  • Work with the accounting department to adjust equine department
  • Perform other duties as requested

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience: Prior supervisory experience required, including the responsibility of training staff and/or working with volunteers. Highly organized with strong communication skills. Customer service experience required. Five years’ barn management experience and seven – ten years training equine or combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science or Equine Management preferred. Possess a valid driver's license.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and business correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with customers and groups of employees throughout the organization.

Contacts: Frequent internal contact with Farm Manager, Veterinarian, Maintenance, Volunteer Coordinator and VP/COO. External contact with customers, general public, callers and visitors.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic mathematical functions.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral or schedule form. Must have exceptional customer service skills.

Technical Skills/Tools: Intermediate Microsoft Word, Excel, Explorer and Outlook. Ability to learn internal software programs. Experience with Pet Point required. Use of tractors, vehicles and trailers.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises the work of all Equine staff. Assigns and schedules the work of others, orienting and training new staff. Plans, organizes, directs and controls the work of others and evaluates the operation of the equine department. Responsible for the quality and quantity of staff’s work. Interviews prospective employees and makes hiring decisions; and makes recommendations as to personnel actions like promotions, changes in pay, overtime and discipline. Evaluates staff performance. Keeps employees informed, listens to and responds to complaints and carries out most personnel actions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, handle, feel, speak, hear and see. Occasionally required to lift, carry, push or pull 50+ pounds, stoop, kneel, crouch and reach. Will be working outside in all types of weather.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to the following: fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, and work near moving parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
