Description of Job

Colorado Correctional Industries (CCi) is a cash funded, self supporting division of the Colorado Department of Corrections. CCi provides training and education for offenders in 60+ types of industries to include greenhouse operations, fishery operations, office furniture manufacturing, metal fabrications, printing and much more. CCi provides services to many government and non profit organizations with an emphasis on excellent customer service.

This Correctional Support Trades Supervisor (CSTS I) is a supervisor at the Dairy Farm in Canon City; position supervises the day to day operations and production work flow; ensures safety and security and supervises offender work crews. Ensures comprehensive training for offenders in all aspects of these fields in preparation for community reentry. Promotes the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values while ensuring safe, compliant and efficient operations.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provides supervision, instruction, oversight, mentorship, and training of offenders; provides expertise in practices, products and procedures. 
  • Provides quality packaged & raw milk to DOC kitchens and local cooperatives while supervising & training offenders in proper procedures and guidelines.
  • Coordinates and oversees products and production practices to ensure health and safety standards are met. 
  • Directs daily activities, promoting positive performance; ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Contributes to profitability; meets established quality standards.
  • Diagnoses and medicates cattle according to guidelines;
  • Performs effective artificial insemination and provides comprehensive instruction during birthing process. 
  • Determines probable causes of illness and determines best course of action to maintain health of dairy animals.
  • Performs hands on instructional work and equipment maintenance.
  • Motivates, reviews and evaluates offender performance.
  • Completes and creates documents and reports by gathering information and inputting information into electronic systems; ensures standard compliance.
  • Ensures the safety and security of the public, facility staff and offenders by evaluating work conditions; instructing staff and offenders in proper safety methods.
  • Provides custody, surveillance, supervisory, transport, shakedown and count duties; ensures proper key, tool, equipment and chemical control; ensures compliance of all policy/procedural guidelines; enforces safety/security procedures by conducting inspections, work site searches and monitoring the work environment.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

  • Four (4) years of professional employment experience in the dairy and/or agriculture industry. 


Applicant may meet the four (4) year requirement with a combination of work experience as follows:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience, as described above may be combined with correctional experience for a total of at least four (4) years.

** Correctional experience must be security related duties where primary responsibilities throughout a shift, include monitoring and controlling offender movement throughout their daily schedules, discovering and preventing contraband and responding to emergencies; ensuring proper key/tool/chemical/equipment control, use,storage and accountability; advising offenders in matters concerning work, programs, appropriate behavior and decision making in order to prepare them for successful community re-entry. 

College or university course work in Animal Science, Dairy Science, Agricultural Management, Farm & Ranch Management or a closely related field will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.  

Required Competencies:

  • Must be able to obtain AI certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to diagnose and medicate cattle according to guidelines.  
  • Comprehensive knowledge of large animal nutrition.
  • Ability to motivate others to work cohesively in accomplishing tasks;
  • Ability to maintain industrial tools and equipment;
  • Ability to effectively work with offenders through daily instruction in a variety of situations;
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations (such as fights, fires and escapes);
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Exceptional discernment and decision making skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of professional employment experience in the dairy and/or agriculture industry if using the substitution;
  • Experience in training and supervising individuals in a commercial dairy environment;
  • Experience working in a correctional environment.
