Assistant Professor, Cooperative Extension Field Crop Specialist

The University of Nevada, Reno Cooperative Extension is seeking for a full time Assistant Professor, Field Crop Specialist located in Fallon, NV.

This 12-month tenure-track faculty position has a 100% University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) responsibility, with a focus toward primary crops and cropping systems in Nevada. The position will provide statewide leadership for outreach, teaching and applied research to improve the sustainability of irrigated arid land crop production systems, with an emphasis on varietal testing, plant nutrition, irrigation management and efficiencies, weed control and pest management technologies. The primary crops grown in Nevada include forages, such as alfalfa and grass hays, silage crops and small grains. There is an identified need to increase the diversity of drought-tolerant crops produced. Irrigation occurs for all crops in Nevada; thus, the incumbent must be able to demonstrate knowledge of irrigation systems commonly used in the Western United States. The typical role for Extension Specialists in Nevada is 60% teaching, 35% scholarship/research/creativity, and 5% service. Candidates with expertise in these areas are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Develop, deliver and evaluate a comprehensive statewide Extension educational program for crop production in collaboration with other Extension faculty and faculty in the College of Agriculture Biotechnology and Natural Resources.
  • Plan and implement a nationally recognized applied research program relevant to the needs of Nevada agricultural producers, supported by extramural funding as needed to accomplish an effective field crop program.
  • Engage in one-on-one consultations with producers and industry partners related to program development and problem solving.
  • Develop productive working relationships with relevant agricultural producers, commodity and/or professional groups, certified pest control advisors, and state and federal resource agencies in Nevada.
  • Participate in regional, statewide and national work groups relevant to University of Nevada, Reno, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and the Field Crops Industry projects.
  • Utilize effective communication skills, both orally and in a variety of printed media.
  • Develop an effective teaching program, utilizing multiple delivery vehicles (e.g., direct teaching, social media, newsletters, internet, distance learning, etc.) to maximize statewide delivery of research based knowledge focused on identified needs, to the state’s agronomic producers, their support industries and associated regulatory officials. The applied research program will be primarily conducted by (but not limited to) the Newlands Agricultural
  • Experiment and Extension Center in Fallon and the University Main Station Farm in Reno, Nevada. On farm research would be well received when appropriate arrangements can be made.
  • Perform manual labor, lift heavy objects up to 20 pounds, establish field research plots, drive long distances and work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Work alone for extended periods and interact collegially with small and large teams.
  • This position will be housed in Fallon, Nevada, located approximately 60 miles east of Reno, Nevada on Highway 50.

Required Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in plant science, weed science, agronomy, crop production or other closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least two years Extension experience.
  • Demonstrated teaching and/or community education and experience with applied field research on the above subject matter.
  • Demonstrated success in obtaining extramural funding. A strong publication record demonstrating both scholarly and user-oriented work.
  • Experience with agronomic education needs and report outcomes and impacts.

Certification and Licensure

  • Restricted Use Pesticide Certificate (within 3 months of employment)
  • Valid Driver’s License
