Description of Work Unit

The Department of Soil and Crop Sciences is focused on education, research, and outreach to solve the world’s most pressing food production issues and crucial matters about Earth, its ecosystems, and their services. Our faculty and staff apply research-based solutions to benefit Colorado and the world. We offer academic programs to prepare students to address national and global crop production, sustainability, and environmental quality challenges such as waste management, water quality, and reclamation of drastically disturbed lands. There are numerous opportunities for students to be involved in cutting edge research related to global food production and ecosystem function and protection.

Position Summary

Foundation Seed Project: This position will initiate contract seed production with seed growers if necessary off the ARDEC location. The position will manage and perform farm operations if required including tillage, irrigation, planting, weed control, rogueing, harvesting, chemical application (pesticides and soil amendments) needed for production of Foundation Seed; scheduling crop rotations and land use to meet seed production needs; manage the field production of Foundation Seed; manage seed conditioning; coordinate distribution of seed to buyers; and hire, train, and manage part-time personnel. This position will monitor production fields and record off-types and other requested characteristics as needed. This position will report business and agronomic activities to Colorado Wheat, CGSA Board of Directors and the CSGA annual meeting. There may be other duties at ARDEC or with the Soil and Crop Sciences Department that will be assigned as needed. During the off-season this position will develop and provide education for seed handling and seed conditioning. This position will perform CSGA seed plant inspections to ensure certified seed conditioners are in compliance with seed law. When available, this position will assist in the Seed Lab at ARDEC with seed analysis projects. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule with extra hours required during the critical production seasons. Some heavy lifting is also required.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Research Associate I + 3 years experience or B.S./B.A. degree in agriculture, agronomy, plant breeding and genetics, or a closely related field + 3 years professional experience.
  • Experience in seed production and conditioning.
  • Experience in working with various components of the seed industry including seed growers, and/or seed wholesale/retail companies. 
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills (verbal, written, interpersonal) and computer literacy. 
  • Ability to acquire a seed treatment applicators license within one year of start date.
  • Ability to acquire a Commercial Driver’s License within two years of start date. 
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds daily and work in various weather conditions
  • such as field walking, rouging with seasonal workers.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in agriculture, agronomy, plant breeding and genetics, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated understanding of seed harvesting and the seed conditioning process.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience.
  • Current Colorado certification for pesticide, fungicide, herbicide, and seed treatment applicator’s license. 
  • Current Commercial Driver’s License.
