The agronomist position addresses the company’s need for field scouting, soil sampling, field trials, fertility, seed selection, herbicide recommendations, and labor support with on-farm production. The agronomist will be responsible for the design and implement of various field trials, collecting and analyzing field data, creating fertility, hybrid, and herbicide prescriptions and using various software programs to process data.  Weekly crop scouting across all of the farms’ acres will be a main responsibility for the agronomist.  The company will also rely on the agronomist to assist with all daily functions of an operating farm including but not limited to planting, harvesting, grain handing and pest control. 

RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to:

  • Weekly crop scouting, taking notes and pictures using an ipad
  • Collect, process and analyze soil and tissue samples to produce fertility prescriptions
  • Process field operation data, satellite imagery, and harvest data using on-farm software
  • Daily support and participation in field operations including but not limited to equipment operations to accomplish planting, spraying, harvesting and more
  • Provide quality control oversight on key farm operations, especially the following:
    • Planter timing, spacing and population accuracy 
    • Chemical application (herbicide selection, coverage and timing) 
    • Tissue and soil sampling during the growing season for fertility management 
  • Assist with grand handling at on farm grain storage facilities
  • Assist team members to support Fontanelle Hybrid seed dealership sales and activities (Commissions available)
  • Other duties as assigned

Other skill requirements for this position include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Ag-related field
  • Previous farming experience a plus
  • PCA (Pest Control Adviser) and CCA (Certified Crop Adviser) licenses preferred
  • Custom Applicators License preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of excel and some previous experience with precision ag software
  • Valid Driver’s License (Commercial Driver’s License a plus)
  • Excellent oral/written communications skills and good problem solving skills
  • Basic familiarity with agricultural equipment such as tractors, planters, fertilizer applicators, sprayers, tillage tools etc. is preferred. Candidate may be required to drive a truck pulling a trailer or other equipment, as well as operate an ATV and spray equipment
  • Ability to work outdoors, occasionally in adverse conditions. Ability to lift up to 50lbs and to bend, stoop, kneel and traverse uneven ground regularly
  • Ability to work additional hours to meet business demands
