Under general supervision, performs technical and administrative work in coordinating the Master Gardener Volunteer program. Assists the Horticulture Agent in supplying information to homeowners concerning consumer horticulture. Contributes to the monthly newsletter. Gathers data and information, analyzing horticultural information for homeowners. Makes contacts and follow-up contact with homeowners providing assistance in the application and maintenance of recommended practices. Recruits, trains, and prepares volunteers for certification and recertification for the Master Gardener Volunteer program. Evaluates volunteer performance as needed, providing leadership to volunteers. Prepares and maintains records of Master Gardener Volunteer program. Assists Horticulture Agent with other program needs, such as recording and entering data, commercial horticulture education, and needs assessments. Ability to perform rigorous outdoor work in various types of weather. Ability to perform physical labor as necessitated by work assignments such as (but not limited to, working with Master Gardener Volunteers in the Outer Banks Arboretum & Teaching Garden. Must be proficient in Excel and Word software programs.

Minimum Qualifications: The minimum requirement for employment with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service (NCCES) is a high-school diploma or equivalent. Advanced training in related fields is preferred. Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws, and standard practices, methods and techniques pertaining to horticulture. General knowledge of tools and supplies used in horticulture. Ability to use common office machines. Must be proficient in Excel and Word software programs. Ability to exercise considerable independent judgment in applying program standards in individual cases. Ability to exercise considerable tact and courtesy in contact with all audiences of all ages as well as Extension volunteers and coworkers. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
