The Grounds and Fleet Services unit provides campus wide programs and services and support for the University’s 2000+ acres of campus landscape, 14.6 million square feet of buildings and the 33,000 students and 7500 faculty and staff that make up the campus population. These programs and services include landscape construction and maintenance, comprehensive waste and recycling programs and services and management of the University’s auto shop and motor fleet. Revenue supported programs and services are provided to Transportation, Housing, Dining, Athletics, Campus Recreation and individual colleges and departments.

Essential Job Duties

The primary purpose of the position is to provide hands on technical expertise in applied horticultural sciences in order to improve the care and culture of the diverse plant life within the NC State University campus. This position is also required to apply sound horticultural practices and integrated pest management procedures on Centennial Campus and serve as an area plant care expert. They ensure that all service agreements Grounds Management has with plant maintenance responsibilities are met according to the contract with the campus customer, i.e., fertilization, maintenance, pruning and soil testing. Position does field evaluation for plant conditions and makes recommendations to supervisor for improvement, monitors and identifies diseased plants as well as analyzes results of testing and corrects the problem. Acts as a training resource, based on knowledge and experience in different aspects of plant care for Grounds Maintenance staff. Additionally, position will be required to troubleshoot irrigation issues and maintenance concerns.

Other Work/Responsibilities

This position serves in a critical role and is essential to the operations of the University. They may be required to work during adverse weather conditions and work even if the University closes. They aid in snow removal as directed by supervisors.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: North Carolina Pesticide License may be required and can be obtained within six months of employment; North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License may be required.

Departmental Required Skills

  • Must be able to effectively communicate verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
  • Horticultural and/or grounds maintenance experience.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds frequently, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

A high level of applicable horticultural care and maintenance, with some irrigation knowledge.
Three to five years of grounds maintenance and/or arboriculture experience.
North Carolina pesticide license preferred.

Required License or Certification

Valid driver’s license required. 
North Carolina driver’s license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
