The Horticulturalist will act as an area/team specialist to provide specific horticultural care to an assigned area of the estate gardens and grounds.  As a subject matter expert, the Horticulturalist will ordinarily be involved with and/or responsible for (but not limited to: design; training; plant maintenance; presentations/talks; ordering and procurement; and special projects and functions as needed.  This is a “hands on” position that will also offer general support to the horticulture crews as well as the leadership teams.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required. 
  • Additional education, training, and/or certification(s) preferred.  The ideal candidate will have a two or four-year degree in Horticulture.Must have a minimum of three (3) years of related horticultural experience. 
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 
  • The preferred candidate will have advanced expertise in a particular area of Horticulture (e.g. roses, tropical plants) and will have had previous experience working in a guest service environment.
  • Specialized knowledge or skills in a particular horticultural area/discipline required (e.g. perennials; annuals; herbaceous/woody plants; tropicals; etc.). 
  • Must be able to identify signs of disease and stress in plants, and anticipate and address issues appropriately.  
  • Must have or be able to obtain a pesticide applicator’s license.Demonstrated leadership skills and/or previous leadership experience.
  • Proven commitment to the delivery of world class products and service both internally and externally.
  • Solid knowledge of design principals and philosophies preferred. 
  • Must be able to perform job duties and responsibilities without direct supervision and in an efficient, productive manner.Ability to be proactive and take initiative; must be able to exercise good judgment and creatively problem solve.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills; should be a superb team player and capable of working across crews and departments, and be able to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively to wide variety of audiences.
  • Should be comfortable with public speaking and be able to represent the company internally and externally with different constituencies and in a professional manner consistent with company standards.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record for the last three (3) years, and be at least 19 years of age. 

Physical Requirements:  (be very specific) 

  • Ability to walk/stand for extended periods of time.Must be able to repetitively lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to kneel, stoop, bend, and reach overhead and below.Works outdoors in all types of weather with fluctuations in temperature and conditions.
  • Manual dexterity with the ability to operate small gardening tools, equipment (including edgers and shears), and standard transmission vehicles.
  • Must be able to work effectively in an environment with exposure to dust, dirt, pollen, chemicals, and particulates.
