Under supervision, performs a wide variety of semi-skilled routine maintenance tasks and projects in the operation and maintenance of park facilities in a manner that will assure a safe, aesthetic, enjoyable, and high quality visitor experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under direction, performs turf, plant, and landscape grounds maintenance functions including mowing, trimming, weeding, mulching, sodding, seeding, fertilizing, aerating, and related park tasks consistent with established horticultural and park maintenance standards.
  • Under direction, performs overall grounds maintenance functions including refuse pick-up, recycle collection, road and walkway sweeping, patching, snow and ice removal, trail maintenance and grooming, chainsawing, creative play area inspections, lakefront and beach maintenance.
  • Under direction, performs a wide range of building cleaning functions. Specific demands are determined on a park-by-park basis depending upon building architecture, design, and use patterns.
  • Under direction, performs building maintenance and repair functions such as change light bulbs, change HVAC filters, drain and service hot water heaters, check and refill water conditioners, wash and clean air conditioning condensers, check and record fuel levels, make minor wall repairs including patching and painting, move and repair furniture, make minor repairs to cabinetry, office furnishings, and tables, and adjust and lubricate doors, hinges, locks, and gates.
  • Operates a variety of noncommercial drivers license park maintenance equipment in performing general park maintenance duties such as walk-behind lawnmowers, riding lawn mowers, walk and riding snow blowers and brooms, chainsaws, back-pack blowers, concrete scrubbers, weed whips, and half, three-quarters, and one-ton trucks with plows, sanders, dump boxes, skid steer loaders, tractor loaders, boats and motors, snowmobiles, small prime movers and utility vehicles.
  • Provides work direction and assists in training on a limited basis to seasonal staff on routine maintenance tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

STARTING WAGE: The starting wage for this position is $14.92/hour - with the full range $14.92 - $20.73.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Six months comparable maintenance experience in parks, golf courses, ski area maintenance, nursery or forestry operations or any combination of education and experience equal to the above.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to maintain records and complete report forms in detail. Ability to follow oral and written directions.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Basic knowledge of landscape, turf, and grounds maintenance procedures, equipment operation, basic hand tools, and building cleaning procedures.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid Class D Minnesota Driver's License required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are represen­tative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk on uneven and rough terrain as well as paved and unpaved trails; use hands and arms to handle and manipulate obje­cts, tools, or controls; and operate foot controls on equipment. The employee frequently is required to stand. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear. When operating equipment, the employee is frequently exposed to bouncing, jostling, twisting, and turning of upper body. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts, drive belts, blades, and gears. The employee regularly works in outside weather condi­tions year-round with regular exposure to cold often below zero degrees and low wind chill. Conversely, summer conditions are often hot and humid with exposure to dust, pollen, and equipment exhaust fumes. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee occasionally works at heights of up to 40 feet and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and some risk of electri­cal shock. The noise level in the work environment is sometimes loud.
