Job Responsibilities

  • 60% - Direct others and/or in the operation of power riding mower (25HP or less), trimmer, edger, blower, hedger, etc. to maintain grounds, sidewalks, plazas, building entrances, canals, building perimeters, tree perimeters, road sides, etc. in a neat, clean, and safe condition. Support arboriculture service with labor to chip limbs, haul debris, perform light chain saw work, pruning, chemical spraying, etc.
  • 20% - Direct others and/or apply chemicals to control weeds, control pests, fertilize and amend soils, apply mulch to beds and under tree canopies, perform weed removal, assist with ornamental and flower planting, litter removal, litter container servicing for cleanliness, cigarette butt removal, etc. Maintain interior plants to include watering, pruning, fertilizing, relocation, rotating, cleaning, treatment for disease and insects. Direct others and/or assist with irrigation work, digging, grading, drain basin cleaning, concrete repair labor as needed.
  • 10% - Direct others and/or perform inspections on mobile equipment and vehicles. Change blades and tires as necessary on mowers, keep some records. Assist with preventative maintenance as required. Work special events (athletic, fraternity, public, etc.) to assist with litter control and related cleanup.
  • 5% - Fills in for a Horticulture Attendant Superintendent to direct the activity of 2 or more crews of Horticulture Attendants, Mobile Equipment Operators and others in assigned tasks.
  • 5% - Perform related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Three years of experience in any of the following: farming, the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, or groundskeeping.

Substitutions
College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty is in any of the following fields: botany, agriculture, horticulture, floriculture, agronomy, forestry, turf management, landscape management or landscape architecture.

Vocational training in the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs will substitute for the required experience on a month for month basis.

Note
Possession of a commercial pesticide application certificate may be required for some vacancies.

Any college hours or degree must be from a school accredited by one of the following regional accrediting bodies: the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; the New England Association of Schools and Colleges; the Higher Learning Commission; the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities; the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Special or Physical Qualifications

  • Due to the nature of this position and/or position responsibilities this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67.
  • In accordance with PS-18 this position maybe required to report or stay on campus in the event of emergency or closure.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Overtime and Weekend Work.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Valid Class E Drivers License Required.

Preferred Qualifications
High School Diploma

To supervise the maintenance of the landscaped grounds of a state facility or agency.

Level of Work:
Supervisor.

Supervision Received:
General from a Building Maintenance Superintendent, Horticultural Attendant Superintendent, Horticulturist or other higher level supervisory personnel.

Supervision Exercised:
Direct line over Laborers, Horticultural Attendants, Horticultural Attendant Leaders, equipment operators, students, residents, inmates, or other related personnel.

Location of Work:
Facilities and agencies statewide.

Job Distinctions:

  • Differs from the Horticultural Attendant Superintendent by the absence of managerial responsibility.
  • Differs from the Horticultural Attendant Leader by the presence of direct line supervision over three or more peer subordinates.

Examples of Work

  • Supervises and trains subordinates involved in all aspects of grounds maintenance.
  • Issues equipment and supplies to subordinates. Purchases necessary replacement parts.
  • Operates, maintains, and repairs horticultural and irrigation equipment. Trains and supervises subordinates in maintenance of equipment.
  • Consults with supervisor and other division managers to coordinate jobs. Works with contractors during construction projects.
  • Keeps records of time and attendance, inventory and related records.
  • Provides orientation and continuing education to grounds crews.
  • Performs any related duties necessary to maintain and improve the appearance of the grounds of the agency serviced.
  • Cleans and maintains swimming pool.
