Department Description Department Description Grounds Services maintains approximately 758 acres of managed campus grounds and over 700 acres of forest land/trails. Services provided include Landscape Maintenance, Irrigation, Integrated Pest Management, Landscape Installation, Storm water Management, Forest Management and Trail Maintenance, Parking Lot Maintenance and Arboriculture.

Position Description Responsible for the cultivation, maintenance and promotion of plants, turf or a plant collection in an assigned campus geographical area; and the observation and diagnosis of structural and horticultural problems.
Work includes installation of all new plant material following plans and/or approved horticultural/grounds practices and procedures; maintaining the beds including pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing and spraying of plant material, which may include pesticides.
This position is assigned a wide range of horticultural and landscape management duties to include assisting in cultural activities, spraying pesticides, equipment operation responsibilities, lawn and landscape renovations, landscape installations and repair of irrigation systems.
Participates in landscape design and construction, supplies and arranges special foliage for events, and acts as seasonal color coordinator.
This position serves as part of the snow and ice management team during times of adverse weather in the winter months.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.NOTE: Some positions may require special licenses or certification.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Applicant must possess landscape maintenance experience or an equivalent combination of related technical training and experience, and must have the ability to efficiently and safely operate road equipment; operate and maintain landscape equipment; effectively plant trees, plants, shrubs, etc.; closely monitor watering needs of plants during the warm season; effectively and safely apply herbicide, pesticides, and fungicides; and effectively communicate.
Requires experience in applying winter weather practices; and applicants must be able to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of mandatory University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions, including, but not limited to: a public health emergency, or situation that may require the University to close.
Preferred Qualifications Two years of landscape maintenance experience or an equivalent combination of related technical training and experience.
Required Licenses/Certifications A valid N.C. Driver’s License
Special Physical and Mental Requirements This is a physically demanding position that requires the ability to bend, stoop, work from a ladder or an airlift, and operate equipment on varied terrain for extended periods of time.
Also requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
