The Small Farms Program is recruiting up to 4 students who will assist in maintaining plots at the NWREC Learning Farm and prepare the site for workshops and field days.

All positions are located at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC), Oregon State University in Aurora, Oregon.

This recruitment will be used to fill up to 4 positions (a maximum of 20 hours per week during school year/ 40 hours during school holidays and summer break) student technical positions for the OSU-North Willamette Research Center at Oregon State University (OSU).

Position Duties

  • Duties will include mowing, field preparation, planting, seeding, hoeing, cultivation, training, irrigation, harvest or weed pulling.
  • Manage weeds and other pests organically.
  • Assist with workshops and field days.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

This person may work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and 40 hours per week during the summer.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Must be a current student at an accredited university or college studying for at least 6 academic credits, with good academic standing (minimum 2.0 GPA) or full time high school student.
  • Must be at least 15 year of age
  • Perform assigned tasks without close supervision
  • Capable of working outside and standing/walking for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs

Student employees (but not all employees) may be selected to drive to offsite locations, as needed, at the request of the farm manager. Drivers must be over 18 years old and have successfully completed OSU’s required motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000et seq.12

Students who are under 18 years old are required to have passed a tractor safety certification class prior to operating a tractor.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

  • Occasionally we ask that students stay longer than eight hours to finish a task, but work will not exceed 40 hours/week during the summer and 20 hours/week while school is in session. Working hours may vary by program.
  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Student employees for this position will be working during the summer, but limited positions may also be available throughout the school year and during school breaks.
