Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Observes plants to detect water stress, pesticide injury and disease and insect outbreaks and reports any problem to farm manager.
  • Plants ,weeds, cutivates and harvests experimental plots and field crops
  • May operate various types of farm equipment including GPS guided tractors and harvesters and computer controlled center pivot and drip irrigation.
  • Maintains records of such activities as pesticides applied, planting, harvesting and irrigation and routine maintenance .
  • Directs overall work of farm/ranch crews, conducts inventory, plans and schedules projects, inspects work of employees. 
  • There will be no duties involving working with animals.

Required Education

Required Experience
Five (5) years of experience related to the standard duties as outlined.

Classification Summary
Leads and performs farm activities such as planting, weeding, harvesting and caring for livestock. Performs minor maintenance tasks including electrical, plumbing and carpentry work. Operates a variety of farm equipment.

Classification Standard Duties
Leads students or other farm employees in caring for livestock, planting, harvesting and other farm activities. Sets schedules for feeding and watering animals. Observes animals to detect signs of illness or injury. Treats minor injuries and advises a veterinarian or supervisor of serious problems. Coordinates or conducts the processing of animals including weighing, assigning and attaching ear tags, vaccinating, castrating and dehorning. Leads the preparation of rations and feed supplements to animals according to experimental requirements. Breeds animals. Selects sires for artificial insemination. Assists and attends animals during and after birth of offspring. Plants, weeds, cultivates and harvests experimental plots and field crops. Operates various types of farm equipment including tractors and harvesters. Orders, mixes and measures pesticides and fertilizers and applies them to crops. Performs maintenance of facilities such as water lines, corrals and buildings including minor electrical, plumbing or carpentry repairs. Maintains records of such activities as crops planted and animals bred, sold or slaughtered.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of farming principles and operations.

Skills

  • Skill in the operation of farm equipment and in the use of tools used in the repair and maintenance of facilities.

Abilities

  • Ability to provide work direction to others. Ability to accurately maintain written records. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Equivalency Any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience as approved by Human Resource Services.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CDL License preferred
  • Pesticide Applicators License preferred.
