Internship for Spring/Summer 2017 to work with passion at Windmill Island Gardens – a growing Dutch-themed heritage park in West Michigan. Windmill Island Gardens features 30 acres of cultivated gardens, pastureland and natural areas. We maintain two greenhouses, formal beds, combination pots, hanging baskets and over 100 varieties of trees and shrubs. Windmill Island Gardens is a member of the American Public Garden Association and American Horticulture Society as well as the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association.
Shared responsibility for planting and maintenance of all perennial/annual beds and container plantings on the property. Pruning shrubs and trees. Assisting with tulip planting (Autumn). Use of power tools and mowing equipment as needed. Weekend watering on rotation. Participation in horticultural programming as requested. Possible assistance in finding summer housing if needed.
Our tropical greenhouse is being renovated this winter to become a venue for art displays, small weddings, meetings and horticultural workshops. We are within a few miles of headquarters for development of both Proven Winners shrubs, Spring Meadow Nursery, and perennials, Walter's Gardens. Visits to both will be arranged if student is interested.
Duties & Responsibilities
Shared with permanent staff: watering, planning, planting, tending garden beds and planning additional summer events. Can include use of power tools and mowing. Pruning shrubs and trees as well as developing GIS tree mapping city wide if interested.
Education and Experience
Proven prior experience with horticulture background preferred. Some knowledge with interest in learning more about annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and must be available to work weekdays and occasional weekends. Subject to a criminal background check and physical. Position may be extended or renewed upon completion.
